Early last week I looked out and beheld that moment the light of the sun first tears through the darkness of night. At just that moment I knew my first blog post would be about the eternal light Christ brought to those who live in darkness every day. The sick, the homeless, the hurting and the grieving. Those who go through the trials of life without the light and hope of Christ.
The vision of Word4Women has long been to bring the Word of God to Women everywhere. To provide a venue where women can view how The Word touches everything in our lives, how it changes us and molds us into a woman who glorifies God.
Word4Women was born in November of 2006, but this story begins a month before on my 50th birthday.
Our children had arranged to rent a large home on Lake Lure in North Carolina. They had conspired with my husband to transport me from Richmond VA to North Carolina. I was told only to pack for a weekend and that the climate would be similar to the temperatures in Virginia. We left late in the afternoon, so the last several hours of the trip were in the dark traversing rural roads of which I was unfamiliar. Upon arrival, I was greeted by three children, one spouse, and two grandchildren! After much excitement of seeing everyone and hearing the weekend itinerary, it was time for bed. I needed a good night of rest as one of my life goals was to watch the sunrise the day I turned fifty.
Early the next morning I rose quietly, grabbed a flashlight and in the chill of the late October morning I walked to the edge of the lake. The dark was cavernous. There were no reflections of light from any nearby city, no large security lights. Nothing. Pitch black. The only light was the sun as it cut through the darkness. The edges of the clouds themselves appeared torn by the light of the sun.
My mind raced as the scene unfolded and the sun rose little by little. Verses danced through my mind. The melody of the words echoing in the back of my mind, “I have seen the Light shining in the darkness, Bursting through the shadows, delivering the dawn. I have seen the Light whose holy name is Jesus; His kingdom is forever; He reigns on Heaven’s throne! the people living in darkness have seen a great light.” Just as promised in Matthew 4:16 the dawn had come. For me that morning my thoughts were for family members who may have seen similar sunrises but had yet to see the light that shines in the shadow of death. They had not felt the tearing at their heart as they beheld the everlasting light for the first time. Their hearts were still in darkness even on the brightest day. I knew the light of the world; I knew the light whose Holy name is Jesus, I knew that each day as the sun rises and tears through the clouds, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech. (Psalm19) I knew that in these moments every day God loudly proclaims I am here.
In December of that year, I wrote a letter to some of my family members sharing the light that entered the world on that morning so long ago when Christ was born and brought light into darkness and with each letter were framed pictures of the light dawning that morning on the lake. To this day my prayer is that all will come to know that light and feel the warmth the Son of God brings into each life.
In Luke 11:34-35 scripture tells us; “Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.” Only with the inner light of the Holy Spirit are you assured of everlasting life.
